What is Mental Illness?

Written & Compiled by Dr. Regina M. Baldwin

Mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood and often their ability to relate to others, themselves and the world around them.    Mental health disorders or illnesses are not a result of character weakness or poor upbringing.

Examples of mental illness are depression, bipolar,  anxiety disorders, ADHD, schizophrenia, addictive behaviors and eating disorders.  Mental illness can not be prayed or willed away.  Most people have mental health concerns from time to time but those diagnosed with mental illness usually differ in the longevity and severity of sign and symptoms,.  There are as many different types of mental illnesses as there are behavioral symptoms.  If you are beginning to become concerned for yourself of a loved one, make an appointment with a psychiatrist or mental health center for an evaluation.  Despite lingering social stigmas and myths still floating in our society today, many family health practitioners can and will readily address your mental health concerns.  Mental illness can cause much suffering for both the patient and their significant others and family members.  The great news is that recovery is possible.  Mental illness can be successfully manages just like diseases such as diabetes, cholesterol and heart disease.   Most mental illness can be regulated with medication, therapy/counseling, proper education and emotional support.
